Women In Tech Interviews
Weekly Interviews that Highlight Female Programmers
The biggest question growing up is "What do I want to be" and for some that comes easy, but for a lot of us we often have a change of heart after we start pursuing our careers and sometimes it is all for the best! For Liz, that is exactly the case, here is her story. What was the first thing that peaked your interest in programming?
I have always been interested in how technology works: the internet, video games, and mobile devices. My dad is big into technology so I grew up around it. I didn’t get seriously interested into programming until 2012. I was 18 years old, in college, and already majoring in Nursing. It took just 1 programming class for me to switch majors.

Being inspired is one thing, but being able to lead by example and inspire others is a whole new level. Camille does just that through her work with different diversity organizations and STEM groups. She is working in mechanical engineering with an interest in machine learning, all while finding time to volunteer with programs like, Girl STEM Stars to inspire a younger generation of girls in tech. Here is Camille's story. What was the first thing that peaked your interest in programming?
I started a website when I was 12 using templates and then became interested in making my own changes. By the time I was 15 I was using Wordpress and at 17 I opened up a small web design business that I used to pay for my first year of college housing. Technology is all around us, in everything we do everyday. Behind each piece of tech is someone who helped conceptualize, design, create it and market it, and this week's interview is with Lisa Godwin a developer who's had her hand in each part of the process. What was the first thing that peaked your interest in programming?
Growing up I was really into gaming, all types of games; computer and video. Once I got middle school age I started exploring the technology that creates video games and became fascinated since. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Cara, an Atlanta based developer who's love of programming started young and who works with organizations to bring that same passion of tech to a new generation of girls! 1) What was the first thing that peaked your interest in programming?
As a kid, my mother would bring home educational software games from her school. I would play games like 'Reader Rabbit', 'ClueFinders', and 'Where in the World is Carmen San Diego'. I loved playing the games as I learned to read and do basic arithmetic, but what was even more interesting to me was how these games were created. As I got older, my interest in programming was sparked even more when I started playing Roller Coaster Tycoon and SimCity. Part of our mission as women in the tech field is to empower and encourage other women to learn to code and join us in balancing the field. This week I interviewed Robyn Silber and she does exactly that through her helpful articles and inspiring social posts. 1) What was the first thing that peaked your interest in programming?
While pursuing my bachelors in math, I took an intro to programming course only because it would satisfy a requirement towards my degree. At the time, I didn’t know anything about programming or computer science. The professor turned out to be inspiring. He encouraged me to pursue a masters in computer science and helped me find my first internship as a software developer. |
